An Imaginary Journey to the Faroe Islands
Rinaldo and Armida
Symphony No. 6
Written to coincide with the Danish composer’s 60th birthday celebrations in 1925, the riotous, gripping Symphony No.6, “Sinfonia semplice” is Carl Nielsen’s final and, despite its title, most challenging symphony, moving from march to waltz to fanfare with boldness and bitter comic irony.
The concert, conducted by music director Russell Keable, opens with Nielsen’s 1927 overture An Imaginary Journey to the Faroe Islands, which was commissioned by the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen and uses Faroese melodies in its depiction of a sea crossing, followed by a rare performance of Malcolm Arnold’s 1954 score for the magical yet tragic one-act ballet Rinaldo and Armida.
