Job: A Masque for Dancing

Ninety-five years after Holst’s opera The Perfect Fool (1918-22) received its première at London’s Covent Garden Theatre, music director Russell Keable presents the magical ballet music from the score, danced by the spirits of Earth, Water and Air. Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances (1940) – the last piece the composer wrote – is stunningly scored, drawing out the tone colours of instruments including an alto saxophone, while Vaughan Williams’s Job: A Masque for Dancing (1931) marks a crucial point in the development of British ballet, with its radiant melodies inspired by William Blake’s illustrated edition of the Book of Job.
