Symphony No. 5
Written for the 2013 Last Night of the Proms, Anna Clyne's Masquerade magically evokes London's 18th century pleasure gardens, where people from all walks of life mingled to enjoy a wide range of music and entertainment.
The Lulu Suite, taken from Berg's unfinished operatic masterpiece about a doomed seductress, is an intense and concentrated combination of chilling passion and voluptuous richness.
Prokofiev's loftily heroic Fifth Symphony, written at the end of the Second World War, was immediately acclaimed both in Russia and abroad. It was, the composer claimed, 'a symphony of the greatness of the human spirit, a song of praise of free and happy mankind'.
